    GARLIC: 
    9/22/09 -
    Planted 35 large cloves purchased from the supermarket, 2” - 3” deep in raised bed and circular bed. Some appeared to be a hard necked red type, and the rest a soft necked white.  Planting now allows them to grow a good root system for maximum Spring growth.  They over Winter very well!
    10/25/09 - Tops almost 10” tall.  Replanted to fill out some bare spots.
    3/18/10: Some of the tops survived the Winter!
    4/03/10 - The bulbs with tops that survived the Winter are growing, but no new shoots coming up where tops died off!
    5/15/10: About 8 or 10 of the bulbs seem to have done very well, judging by the stalks. A number did not over Winter.
    5/31/10: Tops starting to brown up
    6/15/10: Pulled and got 4-5 large bulbs.

 

    Peas:
       Miragreen, Gurneys,
    68 days, to 4’ vines, 4”-5” pods, long harvest - 1/2 lb. - $6.45
       3/16/10: Direct seeded 22’ Trellis heavily. Used most of the 1/2 lb. bag, but saved some for
         reseeding or Fall planting.  On schedule
       3/31/10:  After a week of heavy rain and cold - great germination!
       4/12/10:  About 5” tall and very vigorous!-
       4/20/10:  About 10” - 12” tall. Pulled to trellis with cord
       5/06/10:  Over 2’ tall
       5/15/10:  Now a goods 3 1/2 - 4 ‘ tall
       5/19/10:  Flowering up well!
       5/31/10:  Some vines approaching 5’ and loaded with large pods. Pods should be ready to pick in about a week.
       6/12/10:  Picked the vines clean this week, and a second crop is forming. Harvested about 1 1/2 gallons.
      
    6/18/10: DONE. Pulled them out and will try for a Fall crop!

       Maestro, Gurneys, 61 days, 1/2 lb. - $4.95 -
       Direct seeded heavily (2) 3’ trellis to be followed by melons  On schedule
       3/31/10:  After a week of heavy rain and cold - the start of germination!
       4/12/10:  About 3” tall and very vigorous!
       5/06/10:  Over 18” tall
       5/15/10:  Same hgt. but first flowers have appeared.
       5/31/10:  Pods should be ready to pick in about a week. Vines about 3’ and much lower yield than Miragreen
       6/4/10: Picked the first batch - about 1-pint
       6/12/10:  Pulled vines from trellis in potato bed, & replanted with melons. I left the other small trellis up because there is some flowering.
      
    6/18/10: DONE. Pulled them out and will try for a Fall crop!

      

    Sugar Snaps:
      Sugar Snap, Johnny’s, 62 Days, 1/2 lb. $6.40 -
       3/16/10: Direct seeded heavily an 8’ trellis  On schedule
       3/31/10: After a week of heavy rain and cold - the start of germination!
       4/12/10:  About 3” tall and very vigorous!
       4/20/10:  About 10” - 12” tall. Pulled to trellis with cord
       5/06/10:  Over 18” tall
       5/15/10:  A good 3 - 3 1/2 ‘ tall
       5/31/10:  Vines close to 5’ and starting to flower.
       6/5/10: Should be ready to start picking in a few days.
       6/12/10:  Picked enough for our first meal on Thursday, and enough for another meal today, in the fridge. Plenty of pods sizing up on the vines.
       7/17/10:  Pulled them & got good yield this year!

    Spinach:

       5/14/10:  Picked and enjoyed the first batch last night.  This variety is out performing
         the Noble Giant
       5/31/10:  Became overgrown. Picked tow large bags and pulled the plants. Reseeded.
       6/5/10: Newly reseeded germinated already.
       6/12/10:  Re-seeded a few bare spots.
      
    7/10/10: Done Turned it under.  Never took off with the heat.

      6/5/10:  Some vines up to 2’ tall already
      7/16/10: On my second picking.  Prodicing well, but a little sparse.  Next year, seed thicker

 

 

    Green Bush Beans:

       7/16/10:  The rabbits have been destroying them, eating the beans as soon as they start to develope.  I plan to fence them off tomorrow.  Might get a small yield.
       7/16/10:

       5/15/10:  Germination is sparse, but some still germinating.  Could be just slow germination due to
       the terrible weather. Filled in some sparse areas with seed from 2008
       5/31/10:  Doing well & good growth.
       6/5/10: Should start flowering this week!
       7/16/10:  The rabbits have been destroying them, eating the beans as soon as they start to develope.  I plan to fence them off tomorrow.  Might get a small yield.

 

    Hot Peppers:
      Joe’s Long Red Cayenne, Johnny’s, 60 days/85 to red, Mini - $2.95 -
       2/17/10:  Started 9 cells indoors on heat mat On schedule
       2/23/10:  Germination in all cells - took 1-week
     
    3/03/10: 2nd true leaves formed, thinned to 2-per cell
       3/18/18:  Great growth. Ready to go into the cold frame next week.
       3/20/10:  Moved to cold frame!
       4/6/10: Fertilized with weak Fish Emulsion
       4/12/10:  Set-out under mini-greenhouses
       5/06/10:  Took a beating from flea beetles and bad weather, but came back and are doing well.
       5/15/10:  Still holding strong.
       5/31/10: Doing very well & showing good growth.
       6/5/10: Mulched today. Should start flowering this week!
       7/16/10:  Flowering and they are huge - about 4’ tall.

       4/06/10:  Fertilized with weak Fish Emulsion
       4/20/10:  Set-out mostly under mini-greenhouses
       4/30/10:  Lost 2 sets of seedlings to what appears to be flea beetles, plus some really cold weather near frost some nights
           Seeded 4 pots with 2-seeds each indoors over heat.  This was the last of these seeds.
       5/06/10:  Execellent germination all cells, now about 2” tall
       5/14/10:  Moved to cold frame.  All have 2nd. leaves.
       5/16/10:  Set out, and sprayed with Deer-Off to repel the rabbits & squirrels!
       5/21/10:  The Deer-Off is burning my seedlings and might kill them. I reseeded with whatever cuke seek I had on hand.
       5/31/10:  Good germination and few surviving seedlings ready to start climbing.
       6/5/10: Mulched today!
       6/12/10:  Great growth & climbing.
       7/16/10:  They had some damage due to vercillium wilt, but have responded well to     Actinovate.  Very health vine growth, but few cukes so far. 
                     They are now flowering heavily.

       Olympian (F1) , Johnnys

       4/03/10:  Germination in all cells
       4/06/10:  Fertilized with weak Fish Emulsion
       4/20/10:  Set-out mostly under mini-greenhouses

    Zucchini:

       3/30/10:  Started 4 large cells, 2-seeds each, indoors, over heat.  On schedule
       4/6/10: Germination & growth in 3 of 4 cells.  Slow to germination, Fertilized with weak Fish Emulsion
       4/12/10: About 5-6” tall
      5/06/10: Lost one, but others showing some new growth and holding their own.  Direct seeded 2 hills, 4-5 each, under mini’s
       5/15/10:  Original transplants are doing well and showing new growth. No germination yet on direct seeded.
       5/31/10:  Original transplants doing great and flowering. Direct seeded also doing great and catching up.
       6/5/10: Mulched today. First fruit in formed and about 4” long.
       6/12/10:  Doing great.  Seeded circle bed among the garlic, for Fall
       7/16/10:  Plants look very healthy with no signs of wilt, but sparse zukes. There are a few on   the plants growing, and 3 plants for Fall growing well.

 

    Broccoli:

    2/28/10 - Thinned to 2-per cell
       3/18/10:  Good growth.  Ready to go into the cold frame next week, and planted shortly thereafter.
       3/20/10:  Moved to cold frame
       4/02/10:  Set out 9 - double seedlings under mini-greenhouses
       4/12/10:  Doing well
       4/18/10:  Removed mini-greenhouses. Great growth
       4/30/10:  About 10” tall and thriving

       5/15/10:  Three of the plant seem to have taken a terrible beating from the wind and might die.
         The others are holding their own and growing.
       5/31/10:  A couple starting to head, and a couple doing poorly.

       6/12/10:  First head will be ready in about 1-week. Saw some cabbage loopers, so I sprayed with Rotonone/Pyrithum mix.
      
    7/16/10: DONE Pick a few heads, but poor yield. Pulling the plants tomorrow.

       6/12/10:  Saw some leaf-curl, so I sprayed with a fungicide.  Chances are it was caused by recent cold weather.
       7/16/10:  There was heavy vercillium wilt damage on about 2/3 of them, but thet responded   well to Actinovate treatments, and should produce.
                     The two I planted in other beds were not infected.

       6/12/10:  Made my first cutting today, for the dehydrator.
       7/16/10:  So-so with small leaves.

       2/20/10: Started 9 cells indoors, over heat On schedule
       2/22/10:  Germination in all cells
       3/03/10: 2nd true leaves well formed
       3/18/18:  Good growth.  Ready to go into the cold fame next week.
       3/20/10:  Moved to cold frame
       4/6/10: Fertilized with weak Fish Emulsion
       4/12/10:  Set-out under mini-greenhouses
       5/06/10:  Doing very poorly. 
    Next year, start 1-month later.
      
    5/15/10: Store bought doing fair. Weather has been cold and very, very windy!
      
    5/31/10: Showing good growth.
       6/12/10:  Ready for first cutting soon.
       7/17/10: Picked a batch for dehydrator

 

    Escarole:  (Scarole)
       Verde A Cuore Pieno, Sementi Italian Seeds
       4/30/10:  Seeded short 4’ row among the garlic  Main planting in early July for Fall crop
       5/07/10:  Good germination. About 1/2” tall
       5/15/10:  Still growing slowly. Planted another 3’ row next to the beets
       5/21/10:  Second row germinated.
       5/31/10:  Doing well.
       6/12/10:  Still showing good growth.
       7/17/10:  Tied into bunched to blanch.
       7/17/10: 
    FALL Direct seeded (4) 3’ rows to replace brocolli
