Fig Trees:
2/25: Brought in from garage and watered.
3/7: Buds have developed into leaves.
3/26:  Great growth and sever large figs on each
4/02:  Repotted into larger pots with a mix of potting soil, compost and organic fertilizer.
4/24:  (Easter) Moved outside.
4/27:  Lost the early set figs as expected.
5/21: Producing new growth
7/9: Trees are growing and loaded with fruit.
8/2: Still loaded with fruit but not yet ripening
9/10:  Picked about 20 figs so far.  They started ripening just before Labor Day!

GARLIC:
08/28/10:  Planted 69 cloves in one of my raised beds. Used largest cloves from very large bulks from supermarket, most likely
a “softneck” variety.  Turned in about 3 gallons of old coffee grinds at planting. Set about 2” deep in loose soil.
11/10/10:  Good growth all Fall. Mulched with dried grass clippings.  Should over winter well and produce a good crop next Summer.
3/18:  All the garlic survived the winter and seems to be thriving
4/30:  Top 18” to 24” tall
5/21:  Still growing strong!
7/9: Harvested it all about 1-week ago and hung it to cure on the deak. Yesterday, I trimmed it and am storing
       in in a large plastic bag in the garage. Many of the bulbs were small.  I need to add nitrogen from blood meal
         next year, and allow more spacing to promote better size.

Cayenne Peppers - Joe’s Long Red - Johnny’s (Saved) - 85 days)
2/17:  Started 9 cells over heat. 3 seeds per cell
3/7: Strong seedlings in 5 cells, new germination in 1 cell, reseeded the other 3 cells
3/10: Those germinated have 2nd set of leaves
3/18:  Very healthy 3” seedlings
3/26: About 4”-5” tall and very robust
4/04:  Moved to cold frame!
4/14:  Thriving in the cold frame!
4/15:  Set out under mini-greenhouses
4/25:  Removed mini-greenhouses
4/30:  Doing well!
5/21:  Great growth. Should produce early!
7/9: About 3 1/2’ tall but not flowering yet.  Very nice growth!
8/2: Loaded with peppers to 8” long.  A good 1 1/2 months earlier that last year because of early start!
8/12:  Picked my first red peppers today!  A good month or more earlier than last year!
9/10:  It has been a bumper crop and I have a lot of pepper flakes already, with a lot more to come.

Green Peppers - Red Knight F1 - Johnny’s (77days)
2/17:  Started 9 cells over heat, 2 seeds per cell
2/24:  First sign of germination.  Two have sprouted.
3/7: Strong seedlings in all cells
3/10:  All have 2nd set of leaves
3/18:  Very healthy 3” seedlings
3/26: About 4”-5” tall and very robust
4/04:  Moved to cold frame!
4/14:  Thriving in the cold frame!
4/15:  Set out under mini-greenhouses
4/25:  Removed mini-greenhouses
4/30:  Doing well!
5/21:  Great growth. Should produce early!
7/9: Several peppers about ready to pick green, but I am waiting for them to turn red.
8/2: Picked a couple green and the first red pepper today!
8/13:  Not a large number but the peppers are huge!
9/10:  It has been a good crop and there are still plenty to be picked.  Saved a large qty. of seed.

Broccoli - Bay Meadows F1 - Johnny’s (55days)
3/7: Started 9 cells over heat, 3 - 4 per cell / Sm. Jiffy Pellets
3/10:  Strong germination is all cells
3/18:  About 3” tall and leggy, as expected!
3/26:  Thinned last week & staked. About 4” tall and doing well!
4/04:  Moved to cold frame!
4/14:  Thriving in the cold frame!
4/15:  Set out under mini-greenhouses
5/21:  Great growth. Should produce head buds soon.
7/9:   Best variety I have grown in years. Large tight heads. A few overgrew while I was away. Getting side shoots now.
8/2: DONE Pulled the plants today!

7/9: New planting. Direct seeded 12 hills replacing the lettuce, 3 seeds per.
8/2: About 5-6” tall. Should produce a Fall crop.
8/12:  Showing more growth.

8/2:  2nd New planting. Replacing old brocolli pulled today
8/12:  Germinated and growing.
9/10:  New planting is about 10” tall and should priduce for Fall.
 

Italian Parsley - Giant of Italy - Johnny’s (75days)
3/7: Started 9 cells over heat, 5 - 6 per cell / Sm. Jiffy Pellets
3/18:  Good germination in only 1-cell, and another possibly starting. These can take up to 30-days to germinate
 
*  3 or 4 of last years parsley plants survived the Winter and are greening up!
3/26: Germination sparse but in all cells. Reseeded last week.
4/04:  Direct seeded left over seed.
4/14:  Indoor - sparse but healthy
4/25:  Removed mini-greenhouses
4/30:  Set out.
5/21:  Holding their own and should do OK now that the cold & rain are over.
7/9: I added some store bought seedlings a few weeks ago. Area gets little sun so growth is not vigorous.

8/2: Picked & dried one batch, and ready for a second picking
8/12:  Picked & dried another batch. Not a good yield this year.
9/10:  Still producing but small crop.

Eggplant - Nardia - Johnny’s (67 days)
3/7: Started 9 cells over heat, 2 seeds per cell
3/18: Very healthy 1 1/2” seedlings in all cells
3/26: About 2” tall. Thinned!

4/12:  Moved to cold frame.
4/30:  Set out under mini-greenhouses
5/21:  All showing great growth except 1.  I directed seeded the few remaining seeds around it.
7/9: In flower. Plants all different sizes, from large to small. No explanation!

8/2: Starting to size up. A couple to 6” now.
8/11:  Picked my first yesterday!
9/10:  Picked a few large ones and there are still several small ones growing.

Sweet Peas - Miragreen - Gurneys  (68 days)
3/18:  Seeded 16’ row along a trellis
4/04:  Good germination.
4/14:  About 3”-4” tall
4/30:  About 10” tall. Sowed the left over seed.
5/21:  About 2’ tall and should start flowering soon.
7/9: Picked the last about 2-weeks ago. Poor yield on great looking vines. Only about a quart or a little more.
Going back to Green Arrow next year!

Snap Peas - Sugar Snap - Johnny’s (62 days)
3/18:  Seeded 8’ row along a trellis
4/14:  Finally germinated
4/30:  About 8” tall.  Sowed the left over seed.
5/21:  About 2’ tall and should start flowering soon.
7/9: Have been picking for about 2-weeks and getting great yield. Vines still very healthy & producing.
8/2: Done and pulled the vines today. Reseeded with Sugar Sprint, a shorter variety.

Strawberries - Whopper - Gurneys
3/18:  Set out 45 plants in a 4’ x 10’ bed and 4 others in a hanging basket
4/04: Just sitting there due to very cold weather. Holding their own.
4/14:  All showing signs of growth!
4/30:  Starting to flower
5/21:  Setting fruit.  Completely caged in.
7/9: Very disappointed in the yield and size of the fruit.  Plants looked vigorous and are non producing many runners.
Hopefully next year will be better.

Spinach - Tyee - Johnny’s (40 days)
3/18: Planted 3 - 4’ rows
4/04: Germinated
4/14:  Doing well!
4/30:  About 3” tall
5/21:  Ready to pick NOW
5/28:  Picked all of this planting.  Enough for several meals, Leaves fairly small
6/9: Picked the last of it today that was going to seed.  Pretty good yield.
9/2: Planted several 4’ rows for Fall
9/10:  Good germination.
 

Lettuce - Allstar Gourmet Mix - Johnny’s (28 days)
3/18:  Planted 2 - 4’ rows
4/14:  Doing well!
4/30:  About 3” tall
5/21:  Ready to pick NOW
7/9: Picked the last today. Excellent yield and quality.
8/2: Reseeded in one of the round beds
8/12:  Germinated & growing!

3/26: Started 9 cells over heat
3/28:  Germination in most of the cells!
4/14:  Healthy!  About 1 1/2” tall
5/21:  Set out plants holding their own. Ditected seeding did nothing.
7/9: Direct seeding did produce 2 healthy plants. Did 1-picking and ready for another.
8/2: Did 2 picking & dries, and another ready to be picked.
8/9:L  Picked another batch & dehydrated.

9/10:  Still producing.  Dryed another bib batch this week.

Tomato - Big Beef F1 - Johnnys - 70 days
3/26: Started 9 cells over heat w/ Root Shield
4/02:  Germination if all cells, already about 2” tall
4/14:  About 4” tall and thriving
4/30:  Set-out
5/21:  About 10” tall and showing great growth!
7/9: The main planting doing OK with only 1-plant showing wilt. Three others planted in another bed where I
forgot to put Root Shield in the plant hole, heavily wilted and I will lose them.  Good sized fruit on the vine green.
8/2: TOTAL CROP FAILURE!! Something ate every green tomato off the vines.  Plants has some wilt, but
   were bearing until this.  No clue what it is, but someone suggested chipmonks.

Tomato -Sun Cherry F1 - Johnnys - 58 days
3/26: Started 9 cells over heat w/ Root Shield
4/02:  Germination if all cells, already about 2” tall
4/14:  About 4” tall and thriving
4/30:  Set-out
5/21:  About 10” tall and showing great growth!
7/9: Doing well with no sign of wilt, Plenty of green fruit in the vine.

8/2: TOTAL CROP FAILURE!! Something ate every green tomato off the vines.  A few are regrowing.Plants has some wilt, but
   were bearing until this.  No clue what it is, but someone suggested chipmonks.

Brussels Sprouts - Diablo F1 - Johnnys - 110 days
4/04” Started 9 cells, 3 seeds each over heat
4/14:  Tall & spindly. Gave support today.  Germination in all cells!
4/30:  Still tall & spindly. Set-out under mini-greenhouses
5/21:  Doing well!
7/9: Strong sturdy plants.  I am expecting a good yield.
8/2: Plants are huge and starting to sprout for a Fall crop.
9/10:  Still doing well and there are pea sized sprouts al over the place.

Zucchini - Dundoo F1 - 47 days
4/23:  Started 6 cells over heat, 2 seed per cell
4/30:  3 cells have germinate so far.
5/21:  Set out from cold frame.  Long & spindly. Also direct seeded remainder of the seed.
7/9: Extreamly large and healthy plants.  Picked my first zuke today.
8/2: Have been getting a lot of zukes but the heat is now getting the best of the plants!
8/12:  Plants are on their way out, but I may get a few more.

Cucumbers - Olympian F1 - 52 days
4/23:  Started 12 cells over heat, 1 seed per cell
4/26:  A few germinated!
4/30:  Good germination & growth in all cells. Almost 4” tall
5/21:  Set out plants. Thought I was also direct seeding, but I seeded the Edonis instead.
   The Cuke/Melon combo should be interesting!
7/9: Showing some wilt during hot days but manageable. Fruiting with a few almost ready to pick Melons inter-planted doing well also. 
** I did a late planting replacing peas about 2-weeks ago, both reg. & Armenian, and they are about
8/2: Still showing wilt but producing fruit.  The new seeding is growing well and flowering, but showing wilt
during the hot day, which may not be disease.
8/12:  Old plan ting still producing and new planting had fruit on the vine.

Cucumbers -Armenian - 70 days
5/27:  Direct Seeded along small trellis
5/28 - Started 6-cells for small trellis
7/9: Doing very well and setting fruit.
8/2: Doing very well but I am not seeing fruit growing yet.
8/25:  DONE

Melons - Edonis F1 - 70 days
4/23:  Started 6 cells over heat, 2 seed per cell
4/26:  A few germinated!
4/30:  Good germination & growth in all cells. About 3”” tall
5/21:  Set out along small trellis’s
7/9: Doing well and setting fruit!
8/2: A few melons are sizing up.
8/12:  Picked the first today. Sweet enough to eat but could be sweeter with less watering.
8/25:  DONE

Italian Beans - Roma II - 59 days
4/30:  Sowed 2 - 4’ rows
5/21:  Filled in sparse areas
7/9: Healthy plants, plenty of beans will be ready to pick in about 1-week.

Pole Beans (Italian) - Northeaster - 56 days
5/21:  Direct seeded along 2 trellis’s
5/28:  Good germination
7/9: Vines climbed tall and are now setting fruit.
8/2: They produces a lot of beans but the go to seed easily if not picked young.
9/10:  Collected plenty of seed for next year, and a nice bunch for the table. Still producing.

Green Bush Beans - Fresh Pick - 53 days
5/21:  Seeded 2 - 4’ rows.
7/9: Healthy plants, plenty of beans will be ready to pick in about 1-week
       Did a 2nd planting - 3 - 4’ rows.
8/2: First planting done and pulled today.  The 2nd planting is flowering and will produce soon
       Did a 3rd planting today to replace the pulled first planting.
8/12: the 3rd planting is growing and I started picking from the 2nd planting.
9/10:  Picked a small amount from planting #2 and planting #3 is in flower.

Cabbage, Hyb. - Early Green Tender Sweet - 71 days
5/21:  Direct seeded 9 hills
7/9: Nice healthy plants now showing leaves curling into heads.
8/2: Sizing up and forming heads. Should be a good Fall crop.
9/10:  Still doing well, except one head that rotted.
